What Would This Look Like If It Was Easy?
“I just don’t have enough willpower.”
“I’m too busy.”
“My significant other isn’t on the same page.”
“I’ve tried everything and nothing works.”
I hear it over and over. And most of the time it’s coming from a place of genuine frustration, not laziness.
Negative self talk will kill your goals. Truth is, these aren’t moral statements. You are not a bad person because you struggle with motivation, or willpower, or an unsupportive environment, or confusion.
We’ve heard “treat others how you want to be treated,” so now let’s turn it on its head: “treat yourself how you would treat someone you care about in the same circumstances.” We are often harder on ourselves than we are on family members or friends that we care deeply about and want to succeed. We expect ourselves to be superman, conquering every challenge with ease with no regard for our everyday stressors and our imperfect and downright hostile world.
That brings me to the title of this short post, “what would this look like if it were easy?” Not my phrase, but I love its message. There’s always a shiny new object out there that we want to pursue – a new diet, a new training program, some crazy method we saw from a ripped influencer on Youtube.
None of those things are bad, but they become less than optimal if they lead to confusion or inaction.
I’ll use my own approach to nutrition coaching as an example. I’m always looking to simplify, looking for the easiest possible thing we can do at any given time to address whatever issues we encounter while moving towards a goal. Sometimes, that “simplest” thing NEEDS to be precise and complex due to the nature of the goal, and “easy” goes out the window for a while. But much more often, that “simplest” thing ends up being something small, something that can be broken down to such a small change that after a week or two it feels effortless.
Change can be hard. When you feel like you’re banging your head against the wall, ask yourself: “what would this look like if it was easy?” How can you simplify, eliminate distractions, create your own environment for success? Instead of carefully considering everything you COULD do, how could you make this as easy as possible on yourself? What is ONE EASY THING you can do RIGHT NOW that will bring you closer to your goals?
It may feel incredibly small, but a small step forward is better than standing still.
