Every Day is a Gift
Like everyone else, I go through periods of extremely low motivation and lack of discipline. Just because I work in the fitness industry doesn’t mean that I just love being in the gym and working out all day.
Sometimes the gym is the last place I want to be. As humans, we’re wired to seek out comfort before challenge. For most of human history, we’ve had to fight and labor constantly just to maintain our existence. Fitness was required for life. It didn’t turn out well for you if you were weak or frail, and being overweight was reserved for the very upper classes of society.
Fitness as a hobby is a VERY recent phenomenon. “Personal trainers” weren’t even a thing when my parents were born. Sure, most past civilizations have had athletes and warriors, but most people were too worried about growing enough food to survive to care about “hobbies.”
We live in the greatest time in human history. We are privileged enough to challenge our bodies and minds on our own terms. Most of us don’t have to worry about just surviving day-to-day; instead, we can focus on our quality of life. We can put effort into self-improvement for its own sake, or for the sake of our chosen profession and calling.
Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself or wanting to skip training, I remember that I don’t have to. It’s a choice every single day. I’m not forced into anything. But that’s what makes it worthwhile. I can challenge myself and use the gym to not only develop my body, but my mind, my discipline, my resilience, and my problem-solving. Training makes every aspect of life better, especially on the days I’d rather be anywhere but under the bar.
Training is a privilege. Be thankful for the gift of movement. Don’t squander what you’ve been given.
