Take the Long Road

Nothing worth having ever comes easily or quickly.

A friend posted on Facebook the other day. He said, “Long term success isn’t about being consistently intense, but intensely consistent.” Intensity looks good on Instagram. It will get you likes and attention. Think about any fitness influencer, especially in the tactical fitness or strength worlds. They aren’t usually posting the daily grind of training because it isn’t exciting. It isn’t particularly interesting. At times it’s incredibly discouraging. Instead, they’re posting a highlight reel, or doing stupid stuff in the gym every single day in order to get more likes and follows, ultimately to sell more products.

That’s great for them, that’s their business model. But it gives the false impression to many that that’s the way to train to be successful.

Good training isn’t a highlight reel. It’s YEARS of doing basically the same things, day in and day out. There will be injuries, life events, and other massive setbacks. There will be years of regression and stalled progress. However, these are the most important times, the times that separate the good from the great. The great don’t stop pushing forward, even when it seems like they’re stuck. They are relentless.

I don’t usually like catchphrases, but I like this one: “Success is never owned, it’s rented, and rent is due every day.” It’s usually attributed to JJ Watt, but I have no idea how accurate that is. He didn’t invent the concept though. You pay your rent every month. It isn’t exciting. No one is posting on Instagram about how they love to pay their rent. Some months may be better financially than others. But that steady payment is what gives you a place to raise a family and a place to have good times to remember. It gives you a foundation for your highlight reel.

Pay your rent in the gym. You’ll build a highlight reel worth remembering.
