Take Back Control
This is a call to action.
We live in a victimhood society. Everyone is oppressed, nothing is ever anyone’s fault, no one has self-control. For many, people no longer have intrinsic value, but are defined by what group they’re in. Emotions rule, and civilized discussion of anything is rare. It’s tragic.
With that said, not everything that happens to you is your fault. We all have responsibilities beyond what we can control. Accidents happen, kids get sick, your shift at work changes and disrupts your lifestyle. People we care about die unexpectedly. And despite your best intentions and actions, at some point you will fail to help someone that needs it.
Life happens. We are less in control than we think. We aren’t the masters of the universe.
That doesn’t have to be the end of the story. Yeah, we can’t control everything. But don’t let that stop you.
Take responsibility for everything you can control. You’ll be amazed how much freedom you’ll feel.
Become the master of your own thoughts and actions. Master your conscience. Find value in yourself that isn’t dependent on any circumstance.
I’ve found fitness is one of the best ways to take back control. No matter what sport or fitness goal you pursue, you show that you value yourself. You show that your own goals matter. You show that you aren’t going to just be yanked around by the world.
Take control of your nutrition and what you put in your body. I’ve heard every excuse out there for bad nutrition. They’re all legitimate. But none of them are ultimate. You’re busy, you’re running all over the place and don’t have time to cook a good meal. I get it, I’ve been there.
You could have prepared when you weren’t so busy. If you didn’t, you’re not a bad person. Just accept responsibility for your inaction and its consequences. Don’t pass the blame onto your circumstance. Then decide how you’re going to prepare next time.
Take control of your training. We can’t always train how we’d like. Don’t let that prevent you from training how you can. Don’t hold on to the way you trained in college or when you were younger. That might not be possible anymore. But do what you can with what you have. Don’t let your training be all or nothing.
You might not even train at all or like training, and that’s fine too. Just understand that your lack of effort has consequences. Accept them. If you can’t do that, then re-evaluate what your priorities actually are. Don’t live opposite to your priorities and values.
If you value fitness, train! Do what you like and what you can. Put it on the calendar and tell everyone you know. Make yourself accountable and it will be impossible to fail.
No matter where you’re at now, start forward momentum. All you need is a simple plan, one goal for the day or week. Decide NOW that you’re going to take control. If you struggle with nutrition, buy some fruit or jerky to keep at your desk or in your vehicle to snack on instead of hitting the drive thru. If you struggle to get to the gym, find some simple bodyweight workouts you can do at home.
Take responsibility for what you can control and don’t worry about the rest. Start forward momentum NOW.
